Tanghal Sining was founded by Mrs. Helen Saberola of Los Baños National High School's Filipino Department. December 6, 1996 is considered as the foundation day of this school-based theater organization since this date marked the first theater production of Tanghal Sining (TS). Directed by Mrs. Saberola herself, "Noli Me Tangere" became the first ever theater production of TS.
Through time, TS developed theater artists who are passionate about theater. One of the artists who emerged that made a name for himself in playwriting, directing, acting, and production design is Mr. Gian Carlo de Jesus. From being a passionate and driven high school student who served as Tanghal Sining's president during his term, Direk Gian went on to become a cultural worker. Through his continued leadership to Tanghal Sining resident members and alumni, the group innovated its theater practices, and now perform participatory theater productions. Direk Gian also introduced the word "Kayumanggi" to the organization's name, as an apt representation of the thrust of this now community-based theater organization. Now officially called "Tanghal Sining Kayumanggi," the organization has expanded its perspective on theater. Not only does it provide an avenue for young theater artists to be trained in theater holistically, but also that of wielding the power of theater for education and community consciousness-raising.
